XRF Direct
is one of a new generation of Fundamental Parameters programs for the
correction of matrix effects. Being extremely simple, it does nothing else than
calculating the so-called Sherman Equation, in the calibration, and in the
calculation of unknown sample compositions.
This program essentially searches for the only composition that yields calculated intensities that match measured line intensities as close as to one count per second. It is applicable to homogeneous samples, polished metals and fusion beads. The most obvious advantage of XRF Direct is the possibility to use samples as received, without prior calcinations. This not only saves the high cost and delays of calcination, but increases the accuracy by not using the low accuracy calcination results. Loss on fusion by evaporation, and gain on fusion by oxidation are both corrected automatically, thanks to the flexibility of the Sherman equation.
